BOSTON (Legal Newsline) – Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey announced that Boston Electric & Telephone Corp. and its owner, Gerard Cardillo, have agreed to pay $48,000 in restitution and penalties after allegations of violating the state’s prevailing wage laws.

“Our state prevailing wage laws are intended to ensure there is a level playing field for contractors who work on our public schools, libraries, police stations and other public facilities,” Healey said. “We will continue to enforce these laws in order to protect workers’ rights and taxpayer dollars.”

Boston Electric allegedly violated the prevailing wage laws by failing to pay contractors the right amounts and failing to submit accurate payroll records for multiple construction projects in the state.

Under Massachusetts law, contractors and subcontractors must pay employees a special minimum wage on public projects that relates to the type of work the employees perform.

Thirteen current and former employees will receive restitution as part of the settlement.

Assistant Attorney General Barbara Dillon DeSouza handled the case.
