Mass. AG investigating Anthem data breach

BOSTON (Legal Newsline) - Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey said on Thursday that her office will investigate Anthem, Inc. after customers of the health insurance company allegedly had their personal information stolen as part of a data breach.

Anthem also is investigating the matter after hackers accessed its IT system, which includes information on current and former customers as well as company employees. The information included birthdays, names, medical and social security numbers, email addresses, street addresses and income information.

The company recently said it does not believe any credit card information or health information was compromised, which includes claims, diagnostic codes and results from tests.

“Our office takes reports of this breach seriously and will be investigating the matter,” Healey said. “We are actively reaching out to Anthem insurance providers and other attorney generals to determine the extent of the breach in Massachusetts, the circumstances behind it and to attempt to protect Massachusetts consumers.”

Healey encouraged Anthem customers to order copies of their credit reports, and closely monitor their credit and debit cards.
