BOSTON (Legal Newsline) - One of the largest ATM providers in the world has reached a $1.5 million settlement for allegedly failing to follow a previous court settlement in which the company said it would work to make its ATMs friendly to blind and visually-impaired users.

Cardtronics Inc. had motions for contempt filed against it in 2011 and 2012 alleging it had not complied with a 2007 settlement and 2010 remediation plan. The company opposed those motions.

The new settlement will resolve these civil charges and require Cardtronics to update its approximately 95,000 ATMs.

The company says a number of its ATMs already have features for blind and visually impaired customers. The new settlement requires it to develop and install enhanced voice-guidance software and National Federation for the Blind-approved Braille signate for its 95,000 ATMs.

“With this settlement, blind and visually impaired consumers finally will have equal access to Cardtronics’ ATMs in Massachusetts and across the country,” Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley said. “Our office will be aggressive in enforcing the terms of its agreements. We are pleased to have worked with the National Federation of the Blind to achieve this important result.”
