CARSON CITY, Nev. (Legal Newsline) – In a race the featured two of the best-known surnames in Nevada politics, a Republican will inherit the attorney general title.
A half-hour before midnight, Secretary of State Ross Miller, son of former Gov. Bob Miller, conceded the race to Republican Adam Laxalt, the grandson of former U.S. Sen. Paul Laxalt.
Throughout his campaign, prominent Republicans from across the nation rallied under Laxalt’s banner, including former Vice President Dick Cheney, a friend of his grandfather, who called the former Naval officer and Iraq War veteran “courageous” and of his campaign said “no state race is as important as this one.”
Laxalt will replace Democrat Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto. Masto was term-limited.
During his campaign, Laxalt made transparency in government one of his central issues, promising the Office of the Attorney General will have an open and competitive bidding process for contracting outside counsel, and that he’d also push for implementing contingency fees limits paid to outside firms.
In an Oct. 10 debate, Miller said his two terms as secretary of state qualified him for the Attorney General's Office, given his experiences enforcing state election laws.
Elected in 2006 at age 30, Miller was the youngest secretary of state in Nevada history.
