ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Legal Newsline) - Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler announced on Thursday that Maryland Appliance Repair will reimburse consumers after allegedly performing work without a license, performing unnecessary repairs and leaving work unfinished.

The Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division issued a final order against David Lee Mansel Jr. and his business Maryland Appliance Repair Co. Mansel allegedly violated consumer protection laws by receiving money for services not rendered, illegally performing services on heating and air systems without a license and performing unnecessary services under false pretenses.

"This individual had three strikes against him for not being properly licensed, recommending unnecessary repairs and failing to carry out work," Gansler said. "To avoid being taken advantage of, consumers should check the license status and complaint history of their contractors and repair workers before hiring them."

The order requires that Mansel cease operations until a $25,000 bond is posted, obtain all necessary licenses and pay fines to the state in the amount of $166,000 for consumer protection violations. Mansel is also required to reimburse customers for all incomplete and unnecessary repairs and for all unlicensed repairs performed.

Mansel also did business under Maryland Appliance Service, Maryland Refrigerator Repair Service, 24 Hour Appliance Repair, In Home Appliance Repair, Appliance Repair Wizard, Appliance Repair Co., Affordable Appliance Repair and Appliance Repair Wiz. The Attorney General's Office requests that any consumers with complaints about these companies contact the Consumer Protection Division.
