DES MOINES, Iowa (Legal Newsline) - In an agreement with Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller announced on Thursday, Amazon will reimburse $122,000 to Amazon Prime customers in Iowa who were enrolled without their knowledge.
Approximately 1,100 customers will receive refunds and credits as part of the settlement.
Affected customers clicked a free 30-day trial membership promo link. Once the trial was complete, they were charged a $99 membership fee.
“We commend Amazon for fully cooperating with our office in straightening this out,” Miller said. “To its credit, Amazon had taken steps to address the underlying problem even before we contacted the company with our concerns.”
Although Amazon has denied any wrongdoing, the company has agreed to provide refunds to eligible customers in compliance with Iowa law. The agreement also states that Amazon will comply with Iowa's Buying Club Memberships Law by being clearer about enrollment into future programs.
The company will contact consumers who are due a credit or refund.
“Once we contacted Amazon, the company worked with us in fixing the problem and in reimbursing Iowans who may have been charged without their knowledge and consent,” Miller said.
