California’s AG shrugs off notion of succeeding Holder

Harris

WASHINGTON (Legal Newsline) – With her Nov. 4 victory all but secured, California Attorney General Kamala Harris, a rising star in the Democratic Party, says she’s staying focused on remaining the state’s chief lawyer.

On Thursday, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced his resignation, opening the door for Harris to make the move to Washington.

Among Harris, some of the other speculated candidates to replace Holder include the U.S. Attorney in Seattle, Jenny Durkan; Solicitor General Don Verrilli; Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick; and Deputy U.S. Attorney General James Cole.

After learning she was on the shortlist, Harris issued the following statement: “I am honored to even be mentioned, but intend to continue my work for the people of California as Attorney General. I am focused on key public safety issues including transnational gangs, truancy and recidivism.”

In the general election, Harris faces Republican attorney Ron Gold, who has less than $4,000 in his war chest as of June 30, campaign finance records show.

Harris is armed with more than $3.5 million.
