ALTON, Ill. (Legal Newsline) – Before kicking off his Labor Day weekend, U.S. Rep. William Enyart of Illinois made a stop at Alton, home to his top donor – the Simmons Law Firm.
Come November, Enyart will face state Rep. Mike Bost in his quest for another term representing Illinois’ 12th Congressional District.
On Thursday, the congressman paid a visit to the Alton greater area to meet with local mayors and tour Alton Middle School, according to Enyart’s campaign website.
While Alton remains a draw for its limestone bluffs, it’s also the birthplace of the Simmons Law Firm, one of the nation’s leading asbestos litigation firms and Enyart’s top campaign contributor.
So far in 2013-2014 election cycle, Simmons attorneys have pumped $23,000 into the congressman’s coffers, according to opensecrets.org.
In fact, lawyers and law firms have been the primary source fueling Enyart’s campaign, accounting for more than $185,000 in donations.
As of June 30, Enyart has raised a total of $1,246,750, while his Republican rival, Bost, touts a total sum of $636,564, according to opensecrets.org.
Enyart’s site does not mention if he met with any Simmons attorneys during his recent trip to Alton and his campaign has not returned requests for comment.
However, the site does state that the congressman had lunch with Alton Mayor Brant Walker and Wood River Mayor Fred Ufert, in addition to speaking with Alton Middle School students.
