WASHINGTON (Legal Newsline) – An independent candidate from Oklahoma running for U.S. Senate has been granted permission to purchase copies of her own book with campaign funds.
On July 14, Joan Farr submitted a request for an advisory opinion with the Federal Election Commission, seeking to use her principal fundraising entity, Joan Farr for U.S. Senate, to purchase a book she wrote in 2003, entitled “Ten Secrets You Must Know Before Hiring a Lawyer.”
On Thursday, the FEC concluded Farr’s request was permissible.
According to the original request, the campaign committee seeks to purchase all 200 remaining copies of Farr’s book from the publisher at a discounted price of $5 per copy and to give away those copies to the committee’s contributors.
The request provides that the $5-per-copy price is the same price the publisher would charge any other purchaser of the same quantity of the book, and that far will not receive any direct or indirect royalties from the publisher as a result of the committee’s purchase.
Farr will face incumbent GOP Sen. Jim Inhofe and Democrat Matt Silverstein in the general election.
