IL13 race: Former Madison County judge slams Boehner fundraiser for Davis

By David Yates | Aug 6, 2014

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (Legal Newsline) – Former Madison County judge and current congressional candidate Ann Callis is criticizing House Speaker John Boehner for headlining a fundraiser for Rep. Rodney Davis in Illinois’ 13th District.

Rep. Boehner, R-Ohio, taking advantage of the House of Representatives’ five-week summer vacation, attended a Monday fundraiser in Taylorville.

Boehner also is scheduled to appear at a fundraiser Tuesday in O’Fallon for Republican Mike Bost of Carbondale. Bost is seeking to unseat Rep. William Enyart in the 12th Congressional District.

Callis, whose campaign coffers aren’t as rich as her opponent’s, released a statement in response to the Taylorville fundraiser.

“As Congress starts its five-week summer vacation, it is not surprising that Speaker Boehner’s first major stop is in our district to reward his fellow Washington insider and loyal ally Congressman Davis, who voted with the Speaker to shut down the government instead of helping families by raising the minimum wage or ensuring equal pay for women,” said Callis in the statement.

So far in the 2014 election cycle, Callis has raised $1.3 million, only half the amount of Davis’ $2.6 million, according to June 30 campaign finance reports filed the Federal Election Commission.

Callis stepped down from a 19-year career on the bench last year to make a bid for the 13th Congressional District. In the March primary, she easily defeated challengers George Gollin and David Green, allowing her to go on to face Davis in the November general election.
