MADISON, Wis. (Legal Newsline) - Violations of state air pollution control laws in 2006 by a Wisconsin pulp and paper mill have been resolved under a settlement announced by the state's attorney general.
NewPage Wisconsin System, Inc.'s Wood County mill is alleged to have exceeded emissions limits for its air pollution control permit for 28 days in 2006. The mill's permit controls specific air pollutants show to have harmful effects on both human health and the environment.
The complaint, filed at the Department of Natural Resources' request, was fully cooperated by NewPage Wisconsin, which has implemented corrective measures. Additional tests have demonstrated that the permit standard is now in full compliance.
"The state's permitting process is designed to protect Wisconsin's environment while enabling individuals to conduct lawful enterprises," Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said. "We will continue to work with the DNR to make sure that Wisconsin's environmental laws are followed."
NewPage Wisconsin has also agreed to pay penalties and assessments in the amount of $28,000 for the violations under terms of the settlement agreement.
