R.I. AG says Urban Outfitters t-shirts glorify drinking

Kilmartin

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Legal Newsline) - Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin and MADD-RI Executive Director Gabrielle Abbate called on local Urban Outfitter stores on Tuesday to remove t-shirts that glorify underage drinking from their shelves.

Urban Outfitters, a clothing chain with a location on Thayer St. in Providence, is promoting a new t-shirt line with slogans such as "I Drink You're Cute" and "I Vote for Vodka." The slogans make light of the serious matter of underage drinking, Kilmartin said.

"Underage alcohol use remains a pervasive and persistent problem with serious health and safety consequences," Kilmartin said. "Deeply embedded in American culture, underage drinking is still viewed by many as a rite of passage into adulthood.

While it may not be illegal for the retail giant to sell these t-shirts, it definitely sends a bad message and can be a dangerous influence on young adults. I hope Urban Outfitters will act responsibly and remove the t-shirts from the shelves."
