Report: N.Y. AG seeking more information on energy drinks

Schneiderman

NEW YORK (Legal Newsline) - New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman reportedly issued subpoenas to three energy drink makers last month.

They include Pepsi, the maker of AMP, Monster Beverage and Living Essentials LLC, the maker of the popular 5-Hour Energy.

According to Reuters, Schneiderman wants more information on the companies' marketing and advertising practices.

In particular, the Attorney General's Office is looking into whether the companies exaggerated the benefits of the energy drinks, the news service reported.

All three companies have declined to comment on the attorney general's investigation.

But Schneiderman wouldn't be the first official in the state to target the sweet, caffeinated beverages.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, too, is targeting sugary drinks.

His portion size proposal would limit the size of sugary drinks to 16 ounces or less at restaurants, mobile food carts, delis and concession stands at movie theaters, stadiums and arenas.

Bloomberg's plan is expected to be approved by the Board of Health next month.
