ST. LOUIS (Legal Newsline) - Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster announced a settlement on Monday with the owner of a closed St. Louis monument company resolving allegations that the owner sold but failed to complete multiple gravestones.
Jeffrey Thomure, the owner and operator of Standard Monument Company, also allegedly failed to provide the gravestones or refunds for headstones to families who eventually bought other headstones. Under the terms of the settlement, Thomure must finish and provide the headstones consumers bought for 10 graves but allegedly never received.
"I only hope that this judgment helps bring closure to the families who have fought to honor their loved ones with appropriate final monuments," Koster said. "My office will continue to pursue people and businesses that violate the state's consumer protection laws."
Under the terms of the settlement, Thomure must pay $4,699.14 in restitution to five families who ultimately bought other headstones to replace ones the defendant allegedly failed to provide. Thomure will also pay the state $2,000 in fines and has been barred from violations of the Merchandising Practices Act in the future.
The settlement resolves a lawsuit Koster filed in August.
