LANSING, Mich. (Legal Newsline) - Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette announced on Tuesday that his Charitable Trust Section has issued a cease and desist order against the Veterans of America VOA Foundation to cease fundraising in the state.
The foundation, which is also known as the Michigan Veterans of America VOA Foundation, allegedly attempted to deceive Michigan residents during fundraising calls.
"The basic rule for charitable fundraising in Michigan is simple - be honest," Schuette said. "Deceptive fundraising tactics will not be tolerated."
Jason Allen, the senior deputy director for the Department of Military and Veteran's Affairs, and Schuette also denied the organization's solicitation registration.
Veterans of America was incorporated on Nov. 14. The foundation filed its initial solicitation registration form with the section on Nov. 22. During the review, Schuette's office received complaints about the foundation. The Charitable Organizations and Solicitations Act gives Schuette the ability to deny registration to organizations that are acting or have acted in violation of the Solicitations Act. Schuette could also bring criminal or civil actions for past or continued violations of the act.
