SALEM, Ore. (Legal Newsline) - Oregon's next attorney general will be a Democrat.
According to the Secretary of State's website, no GOP candidates filed to run in the May 15 primary election.
Tuesday was the deadline for candidates to file to run.
Looking to replace current Attorney General John Kroger, who said in October he would not seek another term, citing an unspecified illness, are former U.S. Attorney Dwight Holton and former appeals court judge Ellen Rosenblum.
Holton announced in January he was running for the office. In fact, he has resigned from the U.S. Attorney's Office in Oregon to pursue a run.
Also in January, Rosemblum announced she was seeking the job of Oregon's top lawyer.
Rosenblum practiced law for 14 years, including eight years as a federal prosecutor. She also has 22 years of experience as both an appellate and trial judge.
Portland trial lawyer Katherine Heekin, another Democrat, had announced in January she also was running for attorney general.
However, Heekin pulled out of the race last month, saying her law firm clients and family "must come first."
This won't be the first time the GOP has not had a candidate of its own in the attorney general's race.
Kroger was elected attorney general in 2008 after winning the nominations of both Democratic and Republican parties. Republicans did not have a candidate that year.
