Another opening on Oregon Supreme Court

Durham

SALEM, Ore. (Legal Newsline) - Oregon Supreme Court Justice Robert Durham says he will not run for reelection.

Durham made the announcement Tuesday, according to the Statesman Journal.

The longest serving judge on the current court, Durham said he would step down after his third term ends next year.

That makes two seats on the state's high court to be filled by election.

Last month, Chief Justice Paul DeMuniz announced his retirement, saying he would step down at the end of his term in January 2013.

Oregon Court of Appeals Chief Judge David V. Brewer has already said he is running for the Court. He made the announcement last month, shortly after DeMuniz revealed his departure.

He is seeking DeMuniz's seat on the Court.

"I think I can make a positive contribution to the court having been the author of nearly 700 appellate court opinions in more than 12 years of service on the Court of Appeals," Brewer said in a statement.

"I have handled hundreds more cases in the trenches before that as a trial judge on the Lane County Circuit Court. I have a proven record of independence, hard work and commitment to the rule of law in Oregon."

Brewer has served on the Oregon Court of Appeals since 1999. He became chief judge in November 2004.
