TRENTON, N.J. (Legal Newsline) - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is getting pressure from certain groups to appoint a minority justice to the state Supreme Court.
According to The Associated Press, the Legislative Black Caucus sent a letter to the governor this month urging him to make the state's high court more diverse.
The group isn't the only one making the call. The NAACP and the Latino Action Network also asked state lawmakers last month that they only approve minority nominees, the AP said.
Christie has said he will consider the groups' concerns when appointing two new justices to the Court in March.
"We have an obligation to put the very best people on the court and to have a court that represents all of the interests of the people of New Jersey," he said in May, according to the AP.
The Republican governor made national headlines earlier this month when he announced he was not running for President in 2012.
"My job here in New Jersey is my passion. I've always meant it when I've said I felt like the luckiest guy in the world to have this job. I'm doing a job that I love in the state I grew up in on behalf of some of the toughest and greatest people in this country," he said at a press conference Oct. 4.
