SALEM, Ore. (Legal Newsline) - Oregon Court of Appeals Chief Judge David V. Brewer is running for the state Supreme Court.
Brewer made the announcement Thursday, according to The Oregonian.
He is seeking the seat that will be vacated by retiring Chief Justice Paul DeMuniz.
DeMuniz announced his retirement earlier this month, saying he will step down at the end of his term in January 2013.
"I think I can make a positive contribution to the court having been the author of nearly 700 appellate court opinions in more than 12 years of service on the Court of Appeals," Brewer said in a statement, according to the newspaper.
"I have handled hundreds more cases in the trenches before that as a trial judge on the Lane County Circuit Court. I have a proven record of independence, hard work and commitment to the rule of law in Oregon."
Brewer has served on the Oregon Court of Appeals since 1999. He became chief judge in November 2004.
Before joining the Court of Appeals, he served as a judge for the Lane County Circuit Court from 1993 to 1999.
Prior to that, he practiced civil litigation, family, commercial, probate and real property law in Eugene.
Brewer is a 1974 graduate of California State University at Sonoma and a 1977 graduate of University of Oregon Law School.
