Huckabee campaigns for P'Pool

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Legal Newsline) - Todd P'Pool, the Republican candidate for Kentucky attorney general, is getting plenty of GOP support while campaigning this week.

According to The Associated Press, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee will headline a Louisville fundraiser on Saturday for P'Pool.

Other Republicans have already pledged their support to help his campaign -- including Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.

Jonathan Duke, political director for P'Pool's campaign, said last month that Cuccinelli will be supporting P'Pool at a health care-focused fundraising event and briefing of the medical community in Kentucky Thursday.

Cuccinelli and P'Pool share a common interest: fighting President Barack Obama's health care reform.

P'Pool has said he will protect Kentucky by fighting the new health care law.

The GOP candidate says the reform, which passed last year, will change the way area hospitals and physicians do business, kill jobs in the private sector, hurt health care in the state and devastate Kentucky's budget.

Fourteen states, along with 12 others, filed a challenge to the law in March 2010. The 26 states contend that its individual mandate requiring that all Americans purchase health insurance or face a penalty is unconstitutional.

The states, earlier this week, filed a petition to have their challenge heard immediately by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway, P'Pool's Democratic opponent in the Nov. 8 general election, has refused to join the lawsuit.

Last year, Cuccinelli filed his own lawsuit against the reform, arguing that its individual mandate requiring all Americans purchase health insurance or face a penalty is unconstitutional and violates state law.

P'Pool campaign manager David Ray has said many conservative leaders view the Kentucky race as an important one.

Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt also was expected to attend an event this month in support of the former prosecutor, P'Pool's campaign said.
