Koster sues over marketing calls

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Legal Newsline) - Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster announced on Friday that he has filed a lawsuit against a Florida-based telemarketing company that allegedly violated state law.

J.E.C.C. allegedly telephoned consumers in Missouri who had signed up for the Do Not Call list. Koster alleges that the company was seeking to sell subscriptions for grocery coupons, diabetic supplies and various other goods and services.

Koster was alerted to the company's alleged unscrupulous actions when numerous complaints were filed with his office's No-Call Division.

"When Missourians register with our No-Call list, they do so with the reasonable expectation that they will not receive these unsolicited, harassing calls," Koster said. "These businesses are aware of our No-Call laws, and they are realizing that this office will enforce those laws."

Koster is seeking a court order to stop the defendant from making calls to people who are on the no-call list. He also wants a civil penalty of $5,000 to be assessed against J.E.C.C. for each violation. Koster is also asking for all costs associated with the litigation.
