LANSING, Mich. (Legal Newsline) - Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette has announced his support for the reform of Michigan's item pricing law, which would be part of an effort to update the state's regulatory system.
Under the updated proposal, Michigan would be able to ensure that aggressive consumer protections were in place for families and seniors.
"To help rebuild Michigan's economy, we must bring regulations into the 21st Century," Schuette said. "Under the plan passed today, the legislature has struck the right balance between strong aggressive consumer protections and allowing new technology to be used to improve Michigan's economy."
Schuette worked with the legislature to ensure that strong consumer protections were included in HB 4158, sponsored by Rep. Lisa Posthumus Lyons.
Among the protections in place are the prohibition of price overcharges, power for the attorney general to enforce overcharge requirements and the implementation of an attorney general consumer education program.
The proposal also calls for consumers to be clearly informed of prices and for the Department of Agriculture to retain the ability to investigate price accuracy.
