CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Legal Newsline) - It seems West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw will be on the ballot again in 2012.
While he didn't outright announce his candidacy, McGraw seemed to hint at it Wednesday.
"I'd like the opportunity to serve as Attorney General again," McGraw said after a press conference in his offices. "This is a job my life was dedicated to since I was born."
"I appreciate the opportunity to serve the people of West Virginia as Attorney General."
McGraw was first elected Attorney General in 1992. In 2008, he was elected to a record fifth term as Attorney General. In the 2004 and 2008 elections, McGraw defeated his Republican opponent by less than 1 percentage point.
Before serving as Attorney General, McGraw served from 1976 to 1988 as a state Supreme Court justice. Before that, he served as counsel to Gov. Hulett C. Smith from 1965 to 1969.
McGraw, a Democrat, was born Nov. 8, 1936, in McGraws-Tipple in Wyoming County. He received his law degree from the West Virginia University College of Law.
During his tenure as Attorney General, McGraw has been the subject of criticism for his use of campaign contributors as special assistant attorneys general and for inappropriate use of public funds for his own political gain.
