Schneiderman
NEW YORK (Legal Newsline) -- New York Attorney General-elect Eric Schneiderman on Tuesday announced the creation of a so-called bipartisan transition committee that will help recruit "top legal talent" to join the attorney general's staff and to provide policy recommendations.
At an event at New York University Law School, Schneiderman said his transition team is comprised of legal experts and leaders from New York and across the nation, and "reflects a diverse range of legal, academic and professional talent across a wide spectrum of backgrounds."
"The committee has been charged with continuing the tradition of legal excellence and innovation for which the Attorney General's Office has become nationally known, and assembling an office that is above politics and partisanship," Schneiderman said.
Led by honorary co-chairs former New York Attorney General Robert Abrams, former U.S. Attorney Zachary Carter and Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore, the team will help guide six subcommittees to shape the incoming administration, including: criminal justice; economic justice; infrastructure, technology and regional offices; public integrity/anti-fraud; social justice; and solicitor general/state counsel.
Schneiderman said the transition team, while helping to recruit talent, will not make any final hiring decisions. They also will not, he said, provide guidance or opinions on any cases pending before the AG's office.
"I am confident that with the help of this distinguished group of bipartisan leaders -- reflecting a wide spectrum of geographic and cultural diversity -- we will assemble an office above politics and partisanship, that seeks above all to be the best public interest law firm in America," Schneiderman said in a statement.
Schneiderman, a Democrat, defeated his GOP rival Dan Donovan to win the AG post, which was vacated by Andrew Cuomo following his run for governor, earlier this month.
