Truckstop operator must upgrade wastewater system

Miller

DES MOINES, Iowa (Legal Newsline) - Hamilton County District Court Judge Michael J. Moon has fined a company sued by Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller $5,000 and ordered it to upgrade a wastewater treatment system.

According to the lawsuit, Welch Oil allegedly discharged wastewater to a tributary of the Skunk River at the Boondocks Truck Stop in Williams illegally. The company was also charged with failing to comply with proper public water supply monitoring.

Under a consent decree, Welch Oil has until Oct. 15 to upgrade the truck stop's wastewater treatment facility or face more fines. The company must also fully comply with all public water supply monitoring and reporting requirements.

"We are pleased that this matter has been resolved," Miller said. "More importantly, we are pleased that the company will ensure future compliance by upgrading its wastewater treatment system. This enforcement action will help protect the public and the environment."

Boondocks U.S.A. was also originally charged in the lawsuit but was dismissed as a defendant.
