Harris, Cooley to square off in Calif. AG race

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Legal Newsline) - A pair of district attorneys will face each other in California's race for attorney general.

San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris earned the Democratic bid by beating a crowded field Tuesday night, while Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley grabbed the Republican bid.

Harris and challenger Chris Kelly, a former Facebook executive, were locked in a bitter battle of political moves. Harris called for an investigation into the funding of Kelly's campaign, and Kelly publicized a recent ruling against Harris' office.

Kelly sank more than $12 million of his own money into the race and finished with 16 percent of the vote. Harris earned 33 percent,

Assemblymember Alberto Torrico took 15 percent, and Rocky Delgadillo, Ted Leiu and Pedro Nava all had 10 percent.

Cooley took 47 percent of the GOP vote to best John Eastman (34 percent) and Tom Harman (18 percent).

Cooley and Harris are attempting to replace Jerry Brown, who easily won the Democratic bid in the gubernatorial race. He'll be facing Republican Meg Whitman.
