NEW YORK (Legal Newsline) - Staten Island District Attorney Dan Donovan became the first Republican to officially join the field of candidates hoping to succeed New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.
Donovan announced his candidacy Sunday and launched a campaign Web site that includes a nearly three-minute long video introducing himself. Donovan began his public service career in 1989 as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan.
In his video, he says the Democrats' current hold on most state offices has "been a disaster for our state."
He notes former Gov. Eliot Spitzer, former Comptroller Alan Hevesi and former Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno have all resigned their posts "under a cloud of corruption."
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg joined Donovan at his Sunday press conference, the New York Daily News reported.
"It would be a little bit strange to, number one, not support someone who's done a very good job on Staten Island -- he really has, you look at his statistics -- and, number two, someone who campaigned for me," Bloomberg said, according to the report.
"Loyalty is worth an awful lot in my book, and I would -- if Dan Donovan does run, I will certainly support him."
Cuomo, a Democrat, is expected to run for governor.
