Poll gives good news to Corbett, McCollum

ASBURY PARK, N.J. (Legal Newsline) - A pair of Republican state attorneys general continue to lead in their bids to become their respective states' governor, according to polling firm Rasmussen Reports.

Recent polls conducted by the firm show Pennsylvania's Tom Corbett maintaining his popularity among voters, while Florida's Bill McCollum lost two percentage points worth of voters but still leads his likely Democratic opponent by 7 percent.

The results of both polls were released Tuesday.

"These numbers suggest that there has been little or no substantive movement in the race and that McCollum enters the campaign season with a consistent but modest lead," says Scott Rasmussen, founder of the firm. "In short, this race is still up for grabs."

A recent Quinnipiac University poll had 54 percent of Floridians calling McCollum's challenge to federal health care reform a bad idea, and only 40 percent responding that it was a good idea.

McCollum and a group of other state attorneys general say it is unconstitional to require an individual to purchase health insurance.

McCollum's lead in the Tuesday poll is 45-38 over Alex Sink, the state's chief financial officer.

Corbett, meanwhile, is still well ahead of whichever Democrat would face him in the general election.

The poll shows Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato as the main competition, with Corbett leading 45-36. Corbett has a 49-29 lead over former Congressman Joe Hoeffel and a 48-27 lead over state Auditor Jack Wagner.
