Brown hires campaign manager

Jerry Brown (D)

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Legal Newsline)-California Attorney General Jerry Brown has hired a campaign manager to lead his not-yet-announced bid for governor, news reports indicate.

Brown, a Democrat, is expected to formally announce his candidacy next month. Currently, Brown has an exploratory committee established, which allows him to raise cash for a potential bid for the post he held decades ago.

This week, the San Francisco Chronicle and The Sacramento Bee reported that Brown has tapped his senior adviser, Steven Glazer, to lead his gubernatorial campaign.

Glazer, an Orinda city councilman, worked on Brown's 1978 reelection campaign for governor. He served as deputy campaign manager for Brown's failed 1982 U.S. Senate campaign.

Brown is the only expected Democratic candidate vying to succeed Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Golden State's chief executive.

As the Democratic nominee, Brown would challenge either Republican former eBay CEO Meg Whitman or state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner in the November general election.

California governor from 1975 to 1983, Brown may seek another two terms as governor because he led California before term limits were enacted.

He was the mayor of Oakland, Calif., from 1998 to 2006, before being elected as the state's chief legal officer in 2007. He unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nominations for U.S. president in 1976, 1980, and 1992.
