DES MOINES, Iowa (Legal Newsline)-More furloughs are coming to Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller's office, he told employees.
The Democratic attorney general, in an email to staffers, said although there will be no layoffs immediately, there will be more furloughs, the Des Moines Resister reported Monday.
The furloughs come as a result of Democratic Gov. Chet Culver's order for a 10 percent across-the-board cut for the budget year that began July 1. For Miller's office, that means a cut of $860,000, the newspaper reported.
"At this time, we are not planning layoffs of any permanent employees," Miller wrote.
As for furloughs, all staff face at least one more furlough day. He said higher-paid employees face three more furloughs, while some staff members may be reassigned.
"I understand the disruption that staff reassignments may cause. I also appreciate the reality that fewer employees, working reduced hours, will still need to get the job done," Miller wrote. "However, I am very confident that, together, we can rise to the challenge, resolve any transition issues, and continue to provide the state and the public with outstanding legal representation."
The plan must be approved by the governor's office.
