ATLANTA (Legal Newsline) - Ken Hodges has received the support of former Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears in his campaign to become the state's next attorney general.
Hodges, a Democrat, is a former district attorney in Albany. Sears left the court in June and was mentioned as a possible candidate to replace U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter. President Barack Obama eventually nominated Sonia Sotomayor, who was confirmed by the Senate.
Sears' endorsement of Hodges was reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Hodges is facing state Rep. Rob Teilhet in next year's primary.
Sears is scheduled to start work at Schiff Hardin on Oct. 15 and also plans to teach a class at the University of Georgia Law School, where Hodges received his law degree.
"Ken has the legal abilities, backbone and character critical for a strong attorney general," Sears said in a Tuesday statement, according to the report.
Current Attorney General Thurbert Baker, also a Democrat, is running for governor. Gov. Sonny Perdue recently picked federal prosecutor David Nahmias to replace Sears on the court.
