PIERRE, S.D. (Legal Newsline) - On Friday at noon, Marty Jackley, will be sworn in as the 30th attorney general of the state of South Dakota.
Jackley leaves his post as U.S. attorney for South Dakota to succeed Larry Long, who is vacating his post as attorney general to become a circuit court judge.
When speaking about his upcoming position, Jackley said he has developed an appreciation for the office's fairness and competency from when he worked as a special assistant state attorney general and as U.S. attorney.
"It's in part the people who work in that office and the work they do that prompted my desire to serve as South Dakota attorney general," Jackley told The Associated Press. "The South Dakota attorney general's office has a strong reputation because we've had good attorneys general. We have good people working there."
The Republican also said he expects to continue programs started by Long, including work on open government and the 24-7 sobriety program that lets people convicted of drunken driving avoid prison as long as they take regular drug or alcohol tests.
