Disaster relief company settles with Mass. AG

Martha Coakley (D)

BOSTON (Legal Newsline) - Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley and LVI Environmental Services Inc. have reached an agreement after the company allegedly failed to pay its temporary workers.

According to the settlement, the Everett-based company will pay out $50,000 in restitution to approximately 159 workers hired last year.

In the fall of 2008, after Hurricane Ike made landfall, LVI recruited and transported temporary workers to Houston to assist in hurricane relief efforts, however, after arriving work was not available, Coakley said.

After spending a week in Houston, the workers were transported back to Massachusetts, she said.

In October 2008, Coakley's office launched an investigation after receiving a series of complaints from former LVI workers that the company promised work but never delivered.

Even though LVI officials felt no additional pay was owed to former workers, it did comply with the terms of the settlement, according to Coakley.
