NEW YORK (Legal Newsline) - Toy guns are putting the safety and lives of police officers and civilians at risk, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo wrote in a written letter to more than 100 companies.
The letter called on local and state manufacturers, distributors, and retail companies to stop selling "imitation weapons" that do not have mandatory labels.
"Realistic toy guns are a tragedy waiting to happen," Cuomo said. "Every day, these imitation weapons put the lives of both law enforcement and civilians at risk."
The following stores received letters demanding the stop of toy gun sales: Big Lots, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Gander Mountain and more than 100 local retailers who purchased illegal toy guns from Rhode Island Novelty Co. Big Lots, Dollar General and Dollar Tree, as well as other retailers throughout the state.
Cuomo said if the companies do not comply with the order then legal action may be necessary.
New York law prohibits the sale of imitation guns -- any gun that is made out of plastic, wood, or metal, or any material that substantially duplicates or can reasonably be perceived as an actual firearm -- without proper labels that distinguish them as toy guns only.
Under federal law, toy guns must be marked with a blaze orange plug in the barrel
