SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Legal Newsline)-California Attorney General Jerry Brown's staff would not be affected by the 5 percent cross-the-board pay cut to be proposed today by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for most state workers.
The governor's proposal would affect about 235,000 state workers who already are taking mandatory furloughs aimed at helping officials plug a $24 billion budget gap. The wage cuts and unpaid furloughs are estimated to save the state about $470 million.
The Legislature must approve the proposed pay cuts.
In addition to workers in the attorney general's office, the proposal would not affect employees of the state court system nor workers for the state Legislature because they are not under the governor's control.
The Republican governor plans to address a joint session of the Democrat-led state Legislature Tuesday to discuss his budget-solving proposals.
He has also proposed this week eliminating welfare for poor families, cash college grants and closing a health care program for children of low wage earners as ways for the state to make ends meet.
