Troy King (R)
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Legal Newsline)-Federal investigators have subpoenaed Alabama Attorney General Troy King's travel records and information about gifts he might have received while in office, officials said.
The probe into King's office became public in March, after former employees were called to testify before a federal grand jury.
In addition to travel records, the U.S. attorney's office in Birmingham, Ala., has subpoenaed cell phone records, phone messages, credit card receipts and his schedule.
Federal prosecutors are also seeking correspondence and communication related to certain lobbyists and companies, including Alabama Power Co., which gave King the use of its skybox at Turner Field, home of the Atlanta Braves baseball team.
The Republican attorney general has not been accused of any crime or wrongdoing.
News of the subpoenas Wednesday came the same day Republican Luther Strange of Birmingham announced his candidacy for attorney general in 2010.
"Unfortunately, ethical lapses, impropriety and incompetence have plagued the office throughout the last five years," Strange said in a swipe at King.
Strange unsuccessfully ran for lieutenant governor in 2006 against Jim Folsom Jr.
