Beau Biden
DOVER, Del. (Legal Newsline) - Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden apparently will not take over for his father, Vice President-elect Joe Biden, in the Senate.
The Washington Post reported Tuesday that Beau will not accept to an appointment to the Senate, according to sources. Beau, a member of the Delaware National Guard, is currently waiting to be deployed to Iraq for a year.
Father Joe and President-elect Barack Obama were elected earlier this month over Republican presidential hopeful John McCain and his vice president choice, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Joe was also re-elected to another six-year term on the Senate.
Obama, of Illinois, resigned his seat in the Senate Sunday.
Outgoing Gov. Ruth Ann Minner or soon-to-be successor Jack Markell will choose who will fill Joe's Senate seat for two years. A special election will be held in 2010 for the final four years of the term.
Joe has said he does not want to resign his seat right away, leading to speculation that he wants Markell to make the choice.
Beau is scheduled to be back from Iraq by the 2010 election.
In his absence, Biden's second-in-command, Richard Gebelein, will head the Delaware attorney general's office. Gebelein was Delaware attorney general from 1979-1983 and served on the state Superior Court from 1983-2005.
