WILMINGTON, Del. (Legal Newsline)-Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden said Saturday that Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama could not have chosen a better running mate than his father.

Obama announced Saturday that longtime Delaware Sen. Joe Biden would be his vice presidential pick.

In a statement, the younger Biden called his father a great leader.

"No one knows better than me the passion and dedication my father brings to everything he does - from his love for our family to his commitment to our state and his leadership in the Senate," Biden said. "He will bring the same passion to the fight for change at this critical time in our history."

Beau Biden is the senator's eldest son. He and his brother Robert were both injured badly in the 1972 car crash that took the lives of his younger sister Amy and mother, Neilia Hunter, who was Senator Biden's first wife. Biden had daughter Ashley with his second wife.

The Delaware attorney general traveled with his father to Springfield, Ill., where Obama made his announcement.

The younger Biden's Army National Guard unit will report next month for a year-long deployment to Iraq. A departure ceremony for the 261st Signal Brigade is scheduled for Oct. 3.

Biden, a captain, serves as a military lawyer in the Judge Advocate General's Corps. Biden has not said who will act on his behalf while he is deployed.
