INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Legal Newsline)-Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter has approved an Administrative Rule that will ban the sale of live coyotes captured outside of Indiana's hunting and trapping season.
The rule would ban the sales of coyotes from March 16 through October 14.
"Many coyotes captured in Indiana are sold, shipped across state lines and used as live bait to train hunting dogs," Carter said in a statement. "While a total ban on coyote sales would require action by the legislature, this measure is a step in the right direction."
Indiana's Natural Resource Commission approved the rule change earlier this month. The regulation still must be signed by Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels before it can take effect.
The attorney general's office, which only approves rules only for form and legality, in 2008 has approved 56 rules affecting state agencies.
