J.B. Van Hollen
MADISON, Wis. (Legal Newsline)-Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen reached a settlement Tuesday with a utility accused of violating state air pollution laws.
Wisconsin Public Service Corp. will pay $225,000 in penalties and costs, the attorney general said.
It will also pay $250,000 to the Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation to be used for one or more energy conservation/energy efficiency projects.
The Green Bay, Wis.-based utility was accused of exceeding state emission limits at its plant near Wausau between 2004 and 2007.
The Republican attorney general filed the lawsuit at the request of the state Department of Natural Resources, which regulates pollution emissions.
The settlement agreement was approved by Marathon County Circuit Judge Dorothy Bain.
"Air quality in Wisconsin is protected through a permitting process administered by the Department of Natural Resources," Van Hollen said in a statement. "The Department of Justice will continue to work with the DNR to ensure that permits are complied with"
