Nevada AG collects $1.8 million in settlements and fees

Catherine Cortez Masto

LAS VEGAS (Legal Newsline)- Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto announced Wednesday that her office has collected more than $1.8 million from settlements and fees.

The money will go into the state general fund. Nevada lawmakers are bracing for a $1 billion budget shortfall.

"I am pleased to report my office's collection of the fees and settlements that will benefit the general fund at this critical time," Masto said in a statement. "I recognize that there is more work to be done, but I believe such funds will benefit the state."

The money came from cases, including those against drug makers for off-label marketing, the attorney general's office said.

To help the state make ends meet, Republican Gov. Jim Gibbons has ordered across-the-board cuts.

Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, the former state treasurer, recently outlined a plan to securitize future tobacco settlement monies. He said the one-time bond sale could generate $600 million.
