RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell threw his support to Presidential candidate Fred Thompson on Tuesday.
The former star of "Law and Order" now has Virginia's top lawyer on his side. McDonnell and former U.S. Sen. George Allen will co-chair the Republican's state campaign.
"Fred is a consistent, common-sense conservative whose record matches his rhetoric and whose vision for America is equal to our many current challenges," McDonnell said. America needs a strong leader, and Fred Thompson is that leader."
Allen is also the national co-chair for Thompson's campaign.
After meeting the other GOP candidates, McDonnell decided that Thompson was the candidate with "a consistent conservative record and bold leadership to solve problems and get results."
Most polls show former New York Mayor Rudy Guiliani with a lead among a crowded field of Republicans vying for the party's nomination in 2008, with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney second and former U.S. Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) third.
Thompson is on the board of advisors of the Bank of Ireland, which became the subject of a recent New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo investigation.
Another state attorney general in charge of a GOP candidate's campaign stepped down in Sept., when Michigan's Mike Cox could not reconcile differences with McCain.
