MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Alabama's finance director will attempt to join the state's Supreme Court next year.
Jim Main told The Birmingham News he plans to run as a Republican in 2008 for the seat vacated by Justice Harold See. See is one of eight Republicans currently on the Court.
Gov. Bob Riley appointed Main to Finance Director in June 2004 to replace Drayton Nabers, who had been appointed to Chief Justice. Main has also served as Riley's senior counsel and top budget adviser, the report says.
"I probably know more about economic development, how the state runs, how cases impact the state, the budgets, than anybody who's ever had an opportunity to run for the Supreme Court," Main said, according to the report.
Deborah Bell Paseur is currently the only Democrat to announce a run at See's seat. Paseur is a district judge in Lauderdale County.
Main was a Lineville City Judge in addition to serving as Anniston City Attorney and City Attorney for Oxford.
In 1972, he began his private practice career. He has argued before both the state Supreme Court and U.S. Supreme Court.
