AG Cox bailing on McCain

LANSING, Mich. - Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox will apparently cut ties with Republican Presidential candidate John McCain.

The Associated Press is reporting that Cox will step down as McCain's state campaign chairman. Two sources, who said Cox has not yet spoken to McCain, leaked the story.

Polls are showing a decline in popularity for McCain, who won the state in the 2000 Republican primary election. Recently, he decided to scale back his operations in the state.

Campaign finance reports showed McCain raised almost $800,000 in the state this year, but fellow candidate Mitt Romney nearly doubled that.

According to a report in the Washington Times, Cox recently had a heated discussion with McCain's national campaign reason, and Cox is upset that workers remaining on McCain's paid staff in the state are concerned more for themselves than the campaign.

When McCain did not attempt to reach Cox to discuss the problem, Cox had had enough, the report says.

Cox is scheduled to introduce McCain at a dinner on Friday.
