BOSTON - Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley filed both complaints and consent judgments Tuesday against a pair of companies that she says did not provide health benefits required by state law.
The papers were filed in Suffolk Superior Court against Time Insurance Co. and Union Security Insurance Co. Coakley said the defendants failed to offer coverage for infertility treatment, outpatient contraception and certain treatments for diabetes.
"Now more than ever, Massachusetts consumers deserve meaningful insurance coverage that complies with all state laws," Coakley said. "Throughout the health reform process, we will continue to stand up for consumers' rights and vigorously enforce the law."
As a result of the agreements, Union will pay $28,000 to Coakley's Local Consumer Aid Fund, and Time Insurance will add $16,000. Also, the companies will pay all claims to consumers wrongfully denied, according to Coakley, and review all denials of consumer reimbursement claims for the services.
Six similar agreements were reached from 2004-2006 with the Attorney General's office.
