Conn. AG seeks to dismiss claim for tax shield

Blumenthal

HARTFORD, Conn. - Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal says that property taxes must be paid on slot machines leased by a non-Indian entity that are located on sovereign Indian property.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Atlantic City Coin and Slot Service Co. filed a federal lawsuit asking that the town of Ledyard be prohibited from taking property tax on the slot machines.

The ACC feels that because its property is leased to a sovereign Indian nation, it should be granted the same immunity.

Blumenthal says the state seeks a federal intervention in a state matter, which he doesn't like.

"This meritless attempt to undermine vital state taxation rights deserves dismissal immediately," Blumenthal said.

He said the matter belongs in a state court, if anywhere.
