HOUSTON (Legal Newsline) - Over the past few months, personal injury trial lawyers Steve and Amber Mostyn continued to pump hundreds of thousands of dollars into the campaign coffers of state Sen. Wendy Davis, the Democratic nominee for governor.
Davis, who will face Attorney General Greg Abbott in the general election, received two donations of $500,000 from the Mostyn Law Firm in the month of March, according to campaign finance reports filed with the Texas Ethics Commission.
As previously reported, on Dec. 31 the Mostyn Law Firm donated $1 million to the Texas Victory Committee - a joint project of Wendy R. Davis for Governor and Battleground Texas.
Since she first ran for the legislature in 2008, Davis has received more than $3.3 million in contributions from the Mostyns, with dozens of large donations of $1,000 or more coming in the past six months, campaign records show.
Mostyn, the largest Democratic contributor in Texas, made hundreds of millions of dollars suing the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association after Hurricane Ike ravaged the gulf coast.
Texans for Lawsuit Reform thinks the latest round of campaign finance reports show Mostyn continues to contribute heavily to opponents of officeholders and candidates who support lawsuit reforms.
"Steve Mostyn has put millions of dollars behind anti-tort reform candidates like Wendy Davis who push a job-killing, trial lawyer agenda," said Dick Weekley, co-founder and CEO of TLR.
"They want to roll back the lawsuit reforms that have made the Texas economy the strongest in our nation. Fortunately, polls repeatedly show that Texas voters don't buy what Davis and Mostyn are selling. A large majority of Texans strongly and consistently support lawsuit reform."
TLR also pointed out Mostyn and other personal injury trial lawyers are also the biggest contributors to the Democrat candidate for Lieutenant Governor, Leticia Van De Putte.
Van De Putte received $225,500 from personal injury trial lawyers, more than half of which, $117,450, came from the Mostyns, according to her July 15 TEC report.
Van De Putte will face state Sen. Dan Patrick in the general election.
The Texas legislature passed comprehensive TWIA reforms in 2011 designed to prevent abusive and wasteful lawsuits in the future and to streamline and improve the claims processes for policyholders, which Davis opposed.
