CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Legal Newsline) - West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey warned West Virginians on Saturday about an email scam related to electronic toll passes.
E-ZPass is a company that provides the E-ZPass device, which allows motorists to pay tolls electronically on turnpikes and toll roads.
As part of a phishing scam, scam artists send emails to E-ZPass customers from an account that appears to be affiliated with the company. The email says that customers have unpaid toll fees and asks them to click on a link to get more information and pay the fees.
The email is not legitimate and Morrisey advised consumers to delete the emails.
"This is unfortunately just another attempt for scammers to try and steal money from honest West Virginians by scaring them into paying an unpaid toll," Morrisey said. "During the summer months many West Virginians will be on vacation or out traveling so they should be aware of this scam if they are using the E-ZPass to quickly pay tolls while on the road."
Morrisey said consumers shouldn't reply to the email or click on the link inside the message.
"Our office wants West Virginians to remain safe while traveling this summer and when checking their email inboxes," Morrisey said.
