AUSTIN, Texas (Legal Newsline) - Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott and his gubernatorial campaign are seeking donations to ensure Common Core education standards stay out of Texas.
Lynn Haueter, a staffer for the Republican candidate, sent out an email to supporters on Monday, warning that the federal government wants to directly regulate what Texas students are learning through Common Core.
"Contribute today to help fight federal intrusion into Texas classrooms. We can't let the Obama Administration get its hands on Texas schools," Haueter wrote.
"When my kids were in school, the last thing I wanted was bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., telling me how to educate my children. We must crush Common Core."
Released in 2010, 45 states have adopted Common Core standards, which seek to ensure a student in Massachusetts would learn the same academics if he or she moved to Maryland.
"Greg Abbott has a record of fighting to keep Common Core away from our state - because as parents, we know what's best for our children," Haueter wrote. "His plan returns genuine local control to our education system and will make Texas first in the nation in education."
Abbott will face state Sen. Wendy Davis in the general election.
