Texas governor candidates make fundraising push as reporting deadline nears

AUSTIN, Texas (Legal Newsline) - With the six-month campaign finance reporting deadline here, Texas' gubernatorial candidates are making one final push to tap supporters.

In the past several days, state Sen. Wendy Davis, the Democratic nominee, and her campaign have sent out several emails to supporters asking for donations in hopes of hitting their $550,000 goal.

Davis sent out an email Sunday saying she will need the money to fight back against Attorney General Greg Abbott's planned TV attack in the final month of the election.

On Thursday, the San Antonio Express-News reported Abbott's campaign is spending $10 million to reserve airtime in November.

"There are already plenty of attacks Abbott and his allies can stuff this airtime with," Davis says in her email.

"Maybe they'll call me more names or accuse me of canceling Thanksgiving. But no matter what they say, $10 million in ads can't take away from the truth. The contrast is crystal clear: our top priority is Texas families. Abbott's top priority is himself and his insider friends. We'll find out what's in these ads eventually. But right now, there's a bigger question to answer: Are we going to be ready to fight them?"

The Abbott campaign has also sent out emails to supporters in recent days seeking donations before the Monday deadline elapses.

"(Abbott's) campaign has an urgent fundraising deadline on Monday, and I hope we can count on your contribution," writes Abbott's wife, Cecilia, in a Friday email. "We must have your support to make Greg (Abbott) the next governor of our great state."

Texas voters favor Abbott over Davis by a 44 percent to 32 percent margin, giving the attorney general a 12-point lead, according to a University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll released June 12.
